Seeking a hard-working and curious emerging journalist who is motivated to learn by doing while working with our NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 newsroom teams. As a News and Production Intern for our station, you will work 15 hours per week and be assigned to areas based on our business needs, your experience, and your interests. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
News:
• Cut video from newscasts and add proper metadata to post them on social media and our website/app.
• Research local stories, write copy, and edit video for both broadcast and digital, translate for broadcast.
• Write, edit, and publish stories, prepare pre-pro elements, text articles, video clips, packages, and digital elements.
• Collaborate with producers, reporters, and talent to gather elements and assist in the production of news stories on both broadcast and digital platforms.
• Use websites and social media tools to monitor and report news and find sources and leads for stories. Monitor mainstream and social media sites for story ideas and competitive intelligence.
• Make beat checks and enter current and future news assignments into system.
• Generate ideas for stories and articles, with a focus on Google Trends, SEO Strategy, and current events.
• Identify story sources/experts.
• Pre-interview subjects.
• Log breaking news events.
• Assist in writing, editing, social media curation, and the overall production of daily content for both station’s website and app.
• Assist with phone/in-person interviews.
• Cut videos from newscasts and publish to website and other platforms.
• Build practical skills with CMS and web publishing programs.
Production:
• Learn about industry-specific technologies used to create live newscasts.
• Be present in the control room to observe communication between the producer, director, and production staff.
• Shadow APC Operators during pre-production and execution of newscasts.
• Receive hands-on training with Automated Production Control technology.
Basic Requirements:
• Fluent in Spanish and English with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Pursuing an associate, bachelors, or graduate degree at an accredited institution with a class standing of sophomore or above (at least 30 credits). Must provide verification of school enrollment. Recent graduates are not eligible for our internship program.
• Authorized to work for any employer in the United States and must not require work visa sponsorship from NBCUniversal now or in the future to retain authorization to work in the United States.
• Must be available to work 15 hours per week.
• Must be willing to work in-person at our station in San Diego.
• News writing and journalism coursework; AP style knowledge.
• Windows operating system experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office.

• Demonstrated and enthusiastic interest in news, storytelling, and the evolving media landscape.
• Strong writing ability, good news and content judgment, creativity, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfortable navigating all major social media platforms for news gathering and trend spotting.
• Flexible, proactive team player with a positive approach to work.
• Ability to work in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

• Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this internship is $18.35 per hour.
